Genre: Contemporary Realistic fiction
Age Range: K-2nd Grade. Kids can relate to the story, especially those with younger siblings. It is also easy to follow and can be completed in one sitting, which adheres to the children's attention span.
Plot: Sophie is a simple little girl who likes to play with her toys. When her moms allows her sister to take one of her toys away from her, Sophie becomes infuriated. She becomes extremely hot and encased with anger. This was evident by the illustrators use of color. For instance, when explaining how angry she was, the page was usually colored with reds and oranges, which for the reader emphasizes the mood that Sophie is in. She eventually calms down by running into the woods and climbing trees. As this happens, the colors on the pages change to cooler colors.
Characters: Sophie, Sophie's sister, Sophie's Mom
Setting: Sophie's home next to some woods.
Theme: Everyone gets angry and has their own vices to help them calm down.
Illustrations. Molly Bang did a wonderful job with the illustrations. Her use of color and value throughout the book was magnificent. The illustrations would also appeal to a younger crowd.
Awards: Caldecott Honor Book, Jane Addams Honor Award
