Genre: Traditional due its heroic prowess
Age Range: 4th-6th Grade. The details are a little too graphic for younger readers. Also some of the suggestive themes in this book are not drafted for young children. Also because of the development of the minds of the children in this age group, the events in this book would be easier for them to understand.
Plot: King Hrothgar is having trouble with a beast that haunts his kingdom. The beast named Grendel protrudes the land slaughtering anyone that crosses his path. He often invades the king's mead hall when he is in search of food. Inside the hall, he wreaks havoc and even eats some of the warriors settled in there. The ones that he doesn't devour, he drags them back to his lair. Eventually a warrior named Beowulf embarks on a journey across the sea to come to the Danish kingdom where the beast is causing trouble. He comes to the land to battle the beast and rid the land of his terror.
Setting: This all takes place in a Danish kingdom about 1500 some odd years ago.
Characters: Beowulf, Grendel, Hrothgar
Theme: The theme of this book is surrounding Heroism and Bravery.
Illustrations: Kody Chamberlain was the illustrator of this book. I absolutely love the way he makes the book look like a comic book. Great use of lines and shapes. I was also attracted to the shades throughout the book. The colors on the pages were dark which made the book suspenseful.
Equity Issues: I didn't find any issues in this book.
